For the Serumula Guest House, our vision is to develop a high quality place to stay, that will serve travellers and the rural community in which it resides, within the ethos of cultural and environmental tourism (eco-tourism), to create:
(1) an exemplar and affordable guest house,
(2) a working example within the rural community of building a successful enterprise that works within the principles of ethical and eco-tourism, and sustainable development,
(3) a future independent funding source for innovative development projects that find it difficult to attract donors (such as community led innovations with higher failure risks), and
(4) encouragement within semi-subsistence producers to participate more in local markets and thereby stimulate their ability and willingness to increase production for sale (see FAO Report ‘Smallholder integration in changing food markets’, FAO 2013).
